As a central component of political discourse and a prolific resource for argument, political humor targets leaders, politicians, or representatives as well as political institutions, groups, actions, and parties. Each of these groups is liable to be a political humor theme. Although previous literature has proved that analyzing the themes of political wisecracks presents valuable information about the socio-political concerns, thematic analysis of political jokes, particularly, in Iranian and American contexts, as a necessary clue for understanding serious sociopolitical issues seems to be an area in need of further analysis. In order to address this problem, this study investigated the most popular themes in Iranian and American political humor. Analysis showed that the general themes of Iranian and American political humor are more similar than different. However, while sexual infamy, racism, and gun control marked considerable themes of American humor, despotic forces and religion-related humor seemed to be exclusively Iranian.

Given the significance of people’s attitudes in shaping the dominant culture of a society, this study intends to see how people react or are emotionally aroused when they see an intelligent person (i.e., sapioemotionality), and then examine the underlying cultulinguistic reasons for different degrees of sapioemotionality in the Persian culture. To do so, first, a sapioemotionality scale was developed and validated using 440 individuals. For further analysis, 68 interviews were conducted and a list of Persian, knowledge-related utterances/expressions were extracted to cross-validate the quantitative findings. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and t-test were used to analyze the quantitative data, and cultuling (culture + language) analysis was employed to examine the qualitative data. The results substantiated the validity of the proposed scale, revealing that the level of sapioemotionality is dwindling in Iranian society. Cultuling analysis, confirming the low level of sapioemotionality, espoused the quantitative findings. In the end, the results were discussed, and a number of suggestions were made to shed more light on sapioemotionality.

Given the importance of complimenting and responding to compliments in everyday interactions, several studies have investigated the strategies used to compliment and also to respond to compliments. This systematic study offers a thorough review of research on Compliment Responses (CRs) in the Persian language conducted over the past three decades. It outlines the theoretical frameworks, the categorization schemes used, and the main findings of the reviewed studies. The bibliographical search on this area yielded a database of 35 studies on Persian CRs for this systematic review. We provide a synthesis of the research conducted in this area, the theoretical frameworks, and the methodologies used in different studies, including data analysis and data collection procedures. We then scrutinize the studies conducted on compliment response patterns in Persian, addressing similarities and differences and any emerging trends. Based on the review of the existing literature, recommendations are provided with guidelines and directions for future research in this area.

The article examines common issues and difficulties of rendering culture-specific vocabulary in a popular American fantasy television series “Game of Thrones”. In a fantasy genre, translators have to deal with different concepts that might have no equivalents in the target language. The purpose of the research is to identify basic methods of adapting non-equivalent vocabulary in the Russian translation of the “Game of Thrones” television series. The descriptive, comparative, and statistical analysis methods provided a comprehensive investigation of audiovisual translation in the linguocultural aspect. The scientific novelty of the research involves the authors’ attempt to compile some essential guidelines for overcoming cultural barriers in audiovisual translation. The research findings prove that a competent linguocultural approach to audiovisual translation facilitates an adequate representation of the source culture through television series in the modern globalized world. As a conclusion of the research, the guidelines for overcoming linguocultural barriers in audiovisual translation were provided.

Having positive attitudes towards the target culture can affect the teaching/learning process. Considering the importance of having the target cultural knowledge on learning English, the current study inspected the Peruvian instructors’ and students’ attitudes towards the effectiveness of having target cultural knowledge on English language learning. To achieve this end, 90 Peruvian teachers and 90 learners were chosen, and then they were given two researcher-made questionnaires to check their attitudes towards having target cultural knowledge. The researchers administered two questionnaires to measure the attitudes of the Peruvian teachers and students towards the effects of having the target cultural knowledge on learning English. The results of one- sample t-test indicated that both Peruvian teachers and students held favorable attitudes towards having target cultural knowledge for learning English language. The findings of the research can persuade teachers to use culturally-based materials in their teaching process.

In the era of globalization and the rapid development of all the spheres of human life, the analysis of the term-formation methods becomes particularly topical. The functioning of frontier and customs terminology in combination with the terminology of legal acts (in particular in legal documents, agreements, and works that contain certain legal recommendations, requirements, and provisions) plays an important role in the period of deepening integration of countries and international relations. The article presents the results of the analysis of the terminological units of the frontier sphere. We compared the professional terminology used in the English and German variant of the same document – the Schengen Borders Code, which is a regulation that modifies existing legislation on border checks carried out on people. It is intended to improve the legislative part of the integrated border management policy by setting out the rules on crossing external borders and on reintroducing checks at internal borders.

The generation gap is the disagreement between one generation and another over beliefs, policies, or values. The difference between the generations is a social reality and must be examined from different angles. In this study, we examined young readers’ comprehension along with the purpose of contributing to our understanding of the inventory, as well as the range of the semantic roles reproduced in the immediate oral recalls. The comprehension of an expository 200-word Russian text read by 22 Russian natives, aged nearly 10-11 years, was assessed with free recall. The revealed pattern of the inventory of the semantic roles both in the reading text and its recalls comprised two types, including main propositions and sub-propositions, the latter of which fell into agents, circumstances, and modifiers. The recalls matched the reading text in the inventory of the semantic roles defined. On the whole, the study indicated that respondents reproduce no more than 40% of the propositions in the reading text.

It is obvious that investigating a text or a poem, regardless of the culture of the period in which the writer or poet lived, is futile. The current study explores the conceptual metaphors formed by culture in the functioning of the autumn word in the works of Russian poetry. The relevance of the work is due to the need for a comprehensive study of those language units that play an essential role in the embodiment of the author’s intention. At the same time, not all words expressing a temporary meaning have received comprehensive coverage in the scientific literature. Among these, lexemes are the word “autumn”. The purpose of the study is to analyze the functioning of the “autumn” lexeme in poetic works of the XX-XXI centuries. Considerable attention is paid to the realization of the creative potential of the temporal lexeme. The material for the study was poetry texts extracted from the “National Corpus of the Russian Language”.

It is obvious that proverbs have their roots in the cultures of any society. Russian proverbs and sayings show a foreigner the traditions, customs, and way of thinking of the Russian people. In the current study, by monitoring posts on social networks and using passive observations of the speech process of native speakers, the communicative situations in which paremias were regularly resorted to were identified. The authors provide a review of the existing research in this area and conclude that it is necessary to conduct an additional experiment in order to obtain the most objective results. The choice of primary material for the questionnaire is explained, and preliminary results of a comparison of various sources of paremias are presented. Examples of formulations of questions proposed to informants are given that make it possible to identify not only the fact of recognition of paremias, but also their understanding. Eventually, further ways of research development are presented.

This empirical research intended to seek the effects of culturally-based conversations on developing speaking skill among Peruvian upper-intermediate EFL students. To reach this purpose, the OQPT was administered to 158 EFL students to gauge their general proficiency in the English language. After that, the researchers chose 100 upper-intermediate students and made them two groups; culture group (n=50) and conventional group (n=50). Then, the researchers gave a speaking pre-test to the mentioned groups. After pre-testing, the culture group received the instruction through culturally-based conversations, i.e., conversations that were related to American and English cultures. The conventional group was instructed traditionally, i.e., they did not receive any specific culturally-based conversations. This procedure continued till the last session. Finally, the researchers gave a speaking post-test to the subjects of both groups. The analysis of the data revealed that the culture group outflanked the conventional group after the treatment. Eventually, the benefits of the cultural materials for teachers and students were described.
